Wellbeing

In 2018, the Merck Animal HealthVeterinary Wellbeing Study found that 79% of practicing associate veterinarians had experienced, within the last year, feelings of depression, compassion fatigue, burnout, anxiety, or panic attacks. 52% of responding veterinarians said that suicide in the profession is a critically important topic. Among veterinarians that reported experiencing significant psychological distress in the past 30 days, only half indicated they were receiving treatment. One quarter of respondents had thought about suicide. When scored for wellbeing, veterinarians did slightly worse than the general population. Wellness strategies and resources are imperative to the health of veterinary professionals.
